I had the great pleasure to visit Tunis last month for meeting with our African partners. My main theme was “Siveco China on the Silk Road”, as our EPC business is taking us from Korea in the East to as far as Algeria in the West! Siveco enjoys a very strong presence on the African continent, thanks to a network of local partners built in the past 30 years. At the same time in neighboring Algeria, our ongoing CMMS project at the Boufarik gas turbine power plant built by Turkish EPC GAMA is moving into final delivery phase.

Experience has shown that the earlier reliability and maintainability are taken into account in a construction project, the better. This approach, which consists in paying more attention to maintenance earlier in the project, to reduce future operation cost, differs markedly from that of most Asian engineering and construction companies, which emphasize cost control during construction with progressive adjustments and modifications of the design as the project moves ahead.

PT Bukit Asam (PTBA) is an Indonesian state-owned coal mining company, partly listed on the Indonesian stock exchange. The second largest coal producer in Indonesia, with mineable reserves of approximately 7.3 billion tons, PTBA strives to become a competitive energy company. The 2x135MW power plant, a total investment of 240M USD, is located in South Sumatra province. China National Electric Equipment Corporation (CNEEC) was selected as the EPC contractor for this project. Construction started in April 2012.

Our Managing Director Bruno was in Tunisia the third week of April for business development meetings with our African partners. The trip started with a visit to the scenic town of Sidi Bou Said for a seafood lunch with colleagues Adel Kalai and Claude Tombu, two of the key people behind the company’s development in Africa. On the way from Tunis to Sidi Bou Said, several Siveco client sites are visible, including power plants operated by the national power company STEG (Societe Tunisienne de l’Electricite et du Gaz).
