Mastering the cloud somersault

That night Sun Wukong moved his spirit, practiced the technique, and mastered the cloud somersault. From then on he was free from all restraint and he enjoyed the delights of immortality, drifting around as he pleased.
–  Journey to the West

Everyone seems to be talking about “cloud computing” this year. We at Siveco haven’t talked much about it: instead, we have been doing it! A typical engineer’s company, we are sometimes too focused on doing a good job rather than marketing… One of my new year’s resolutions was to try to change that!

Imagine a web portal, something like iGoogle or Yahoo! where a multi-service FM company could manage its entire business online. Maintenance data may come from our CMMS ”Coswin”, alarms from the BMS, and other data be aggregated from other systems: surveillance cameras, financial indicators, help desk notifications etc. Mobile users can connect on PDAs (convenient for technicians on patrols) or Tablet PCs (more suitable for viewing reports or drawings).

With the help of some of our key partners, we have since the end of 2009 been involved in the development of this platform. Already used by some of our customers, the solution can work on a single small site on a rental basis (SaaS or “software as a service” as in Brose Wuhan) but can also be deployed nationwide across hundreds of facilities (CCPG).

The concept of cloud, in my view, encompasses several key elements:

 – The solution can either be leased (SaaS) or purchased
 – The system itself is hosted “somewhere” either in a third-party data center or in-house
 – It is highly scalable (from one site to hundreds and more)

Particularly attractive for small sites unwilling to invest in a CMMS and for very large size property owners (whose needs are mostly in terms of risk management, contract management rather than maintenance execution), this approach provides an excellent tool to help our customers improve their maintenance, FM or reduce overall assets risk.

Although traditional single-site project based on our CMMS Coswin remain a major axis of development in the coming years (we actually see a growing demand in both industrial and infrastructure segments), I am convinced that the cloud is the way to go, as proven by our early successes. You will hear more about this in the coming months as we learn to master the cloud and unveil some of the new projects. In the meantime, here is our April newsletter…
