Egypt’s Rail Transit celebrates 1,000 days of safe operation: recap of Siveco China’s involvement

Milestone: 1,000 Safe Operation Days

At 10 a.m. on June 19, 2025, local time in Cairo, Egypt, AVIC International held a grand celebration at the Badr Depot’s Building No. 12 to commemorate the 1,000th day of safe operation of the New Capital Light Rail project. This milestone signifies that the project has achieved 1,000 days of safe operation, with a cumulative safe operation mileage of over 8 million kilometers and more than 10 million passengers transported. The equipment system availability has been maintained at over 99%. Behind this milestone is a digital O&M system delivered by Siveco China.

Early Planning: MMS Design

In August 2017, Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) signed a USD 1.24 billion construction contract with a consortium of AVIC International and China Railway Group (CREC) for a 66km LRT that will connect the country’s new administrative capital city with Greater Cairo including Al-Salam City, Ramadan 10 City, Obour City, Badr City and Shorouk City. In 2019, China Huaxin Post and Telecom Technologies (Huaxin) was awarded the automation and controls contract for this LRT line. Throughout 2019, Siveco China and Huaxin conducted preliminary design for the Maintenance Management System (MMS). The proposal aimed to provide a complete Arabic language MMS system for the light rail project pre-installed with all technical data, to fully support the maintenance of the line. With the signature of the MMS supply contract in June 2020, the delivery phase of the project started.

Technical Advantages: Comprehensive O&M Support from China
