The increasing relevance of maintenance

Those who have been in the maintenance industry in China for a long time (not that there are many of us!) often complain that we keep dealing with the same issues over and over again, mostly in relation to preventive maintenance… Like Sisyphus punished by the gods, forever rolling his huge boulder up the hill, only to see it roll back down again. When I look at the problems we tackle today, they very much resemble those I faced back in 1997 in my first maintenance improvement project in a Chinese paper mill. As far as Siveco is concerned, our approach to solving those problems has, however, significantly improved based on a greater understanding of “maintenance with Chinese characteristics”.

I have talked in past issues of the growing awareness of maintenance, mostly driven by media coverage of deadly accidents and the increasing concern of super-large facilities owners (first of all the government) for the long-term value of their assets. Maintenance is today more relevant than ever. Remember a few months back, the news about elevators/escalators accidents? Official investigations show that “2/3rd of the accidents can be blamed on poor maintenance management”. Think about the ever-expanding national and urban railway systems and all their high-tech complexity! Think also about Foxconn’s “1 million robots”, supposedly for the purpose of being less reliant on workers… The maintenance challenge is going to be enormous! One thing is sure: we will have work to do.

This issue of our newsletter corresponds to an interesting change in the Siveco China organization. Learning from the success of our bluebee® solution “for the worker of tomorrow”, which brings disarming simplicity to solve the complex problems described above, we have launched a roadshow, taking our customers’ experiences all over the country (and all the way to Southeast Asia). For more on the roadshow, see this link or contact us.

In order to further simplify our corporate message, we have also decided to rename bluebee®cloud our cloud-based Facility Management / Risk Management solution, previously known as “Proxima”.

This month’s Reliability article is perhaps unusual, introducing the much-hyped “SOA” technology in practical terms for non-IT specialists. Many of our customers have been abused by IT-babble and distracted from their true objectives. We try to put SOA in the right perspective. The Partner article showcases our efforts to penetrate the Western markets with partner Sichuna Aoruo New Energy Technology. The Customer story features Wuhan Boiler Company, a subsidiary of engineering giant Alstom (the story is taken from their own newsletter). Tips & tricks covers workload management. The Latest news section proves that we keep busy…

This has been an eventful year so far, we are now all very busy to close the last quarter!
